Animal & cell research only

Klotho is a protein linked to longevity in animals. A 2023 study found that a single low-dose injection improved memory in aged monkeys. It has not been tested in people.

Also called: Alpha-klotho

Longevity factor klotho enhances cognition in aged nonhuman primates ↗
Nature aging · 2023 · PMID 37400721

Who was studied
Mice and aged rhesus monkeys.
How
The rhesus form of klotho was first tested in mice, then given as a single injection to aged monkeys before memory tasks.
What it found
Low-dose klotho improved synaptic plasticity and memory in mice, and memory in aged monkeys. A higher dose did not improve memory.
Limits
Klotho was injected in a controlled form, not swallowed as a supplement. Results come from small animal studies, and the dose-dependent effect shows that more is not better.

Safety & what remains unknown

Human safety is unknown. Klotho is a large protein that would be broken down if swallowed, and research-grade products are not tested as medicines.

Talk to a clinician before starting a supplement, especially if you are pregnant, take prescription medicines or have a medical condition.
