Skin & joints · Dietary supplement · protein hydrolysate · Source checked October 5, 2026 · Not reviewed by a medical professional

Moderate human evidence

Collagen peptides are broken-down collagen protein. Pooled trials found better skin hydration and elasticity than placebo, but many of the trials had biases.

Also called: Hydrolyzed collagen, Collagen hydrolysate

Featured study

Effects of Oral Collagen for Skin Anti-Aging: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis ↗
Nutrients · 2023 · PMID 37432180

Who was studied
1,721 participants across 26 randomized controlled trials.
How
Systematic review and meta-analysis of hydrolyzed collagen versus placebo.
What it found
Hydrolyzed collagen improved skin hydration and elasticity compared with placebo. Hydration results varied with the collagen source and how long it was taken.
Limits
The authors identified several biases in the included trials, and many collagen trials are industry-funded. Skin measurements are surrogate measures, not proof of visible anti-aging results.

Safety & what remains unknown

Collagen supplements are generally well tolerated. People with fish, shellfish or other animal-protein allergies should check the source, and quality varies between products.

Talk to a clinician before starting a supplement, especially if you are pregnant, take prescription medicines or have a medical condition.
