AICAR

- Treadmill-endurance experiments with pathway-specific drugs, plus muscle gene-expression analysis.
- What it found
- Four weeks of AICAR in sedentary mice switched on metabolic genes and increased running endurance by 44%. A PPAR-delta agonist worked together with training to increase endurance-type muscle fibers.
- Limits
- This is mouse research. It does not show that AICAR improves human fitness or health, and its effects in people outside hospital research use are unknown.
Safety & what remains unknown
AICAR is not a dietary supplement. It is prohibited in sport by the World Anti-Doping Agency, and human safety outside controlled research has not been established.
