Coenzyme Q10

Heart & metabolic · Dietary supplement · mitochondrial cofactor · Source checked October 5, 2026 · Not reviewed by a medical professional

Moderate human evidence

Statins lower the body's CoQ10, and some people on statins report muscle aches. Pooled small trials found CoQ10 eased those muscle symptoms compared with placebo.

Also called: CoQ10, Ubiquinone, Ubiquinol

Featured study

Effects of Coenzyme Q10 on Statin-Induced Myopathy: An Updated Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials ↗
Journal of the American Heart Association · 2018 · PMID 30371340

Who was studied
575 people with statin-associated muscle symptoms across 12 randomized controlled trials.
How
Meta-analysis of randomized, placebo-controlled trials with checks for publication bias.
What it found
CoQ10 reduced reported muscle pain, weakness, cramps and tiredness compared with placebo. Blood creatine kinase, a marker of muscle damage, did not change.
Limits
The trials were small and symptom scores are subjective. Earlier meta-analyses reached different conclusions, so the evidence is mixed.

Safety & what remains unknown

CoQ10 is generally well tolerated but may reduce the effect of warfarin. Anyone with muscle symptoms on a statin should talk to their prescriber rather than stopping or self-treating.

Talk to a clinician before starting a supplement, especially if you are pregnant, take prescription medicines or have a medical condition.
